Convert JPEG to PNG

Convert a JPEG to PNG online

Open the .jpg file and export it as PNG — that’s the whole conversion. Since it opens as a real layer first, you can also crop, adjust or touch it up before exporting, not just convert it as-is.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Open your JPEG

Import the .jpg file; it becomes an editable layer on the canvas.

  2. 02

    Edit if you want to

Crop, adjust colors, add layers, or leave it exactly as it is — conversion doesn’t require any edits.

  3. 03

    Export as PNG

Pick PNG from the export menu and download the converted file.

Why convert JPEG to PNG at all

JPEG and PNG store pixels differently: JPEG compresses the image in a way that loses a little detail to keep the file small, while PNG keeps every pixel exactly as-is (a larger file, no quality loss) and supports transparency, which JPEG cannot.

Converting a JPEG to PNG does not add transparency to it — a JPEG has no transparent pixels to begin with, so the PNG comes out fully opaque. If you need a transparent background, remove it first with Remove background (AI), then export as PNG to keep that transparency.

A common real reason to convert: a site, form or design tool specifically requires a .png upload, or you want to make further edits without JPEG re-compressing your work every time you save.

Since PhotoJam opens the JPEG as a normal, editable layer rather than just re-wrapping the file, you can crop, resize, add text or adjust it before exporting — the format swap and any edits happen in the same step.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting to PNG make the background transparent?

No, not by itself — a JPEG has no transparency to preserve. Remove the background first if you need a transparent PNG.

Will converting lose image quality?

No, exporting to PNG doesn’t add any further compression loss — whatever detail the original JPEG already had is what you get.

Can I convert without editing the image?

Yes, open the file and export as PNG right away, no edits required.

Does the file get uploaded to a server to convert it?

No, opening, editing and exporting all happen locally in your browser.
